The town and military personnel, past and present, will be coming together on Sunday (September 8) to mark the 84th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
In a first for the town, the RAF College Kings Colours will be on parade, together with the Central Flying School Kings Colours, and 45 Sqn Standards – but there will be no presence from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight this year.
Led by the Band of the RAF College, the parade will see RAF Cranwell parade through the town with weapons fixed, as well as veterans, 1260 Squadron ATC, and 303 (Worksop) Squadron marching together.
Wreath-laying will take place before the parade, with the Civic procession leaving the Town Hall at 10.15am. The Last Post, the silence, and Reveille will be observed following the laying of the final wreath.
Ex-RAF personnel are welcome to join the parade, and must be at London Road car park no later than 10.30am when the Parade will form up. The Parade will step off at 10.45am sharp, and make its’ way through to the Market Place where all ranks will be inspected.
Air Chief Marshal, Sir Andrew Pulford GCB CBE DL, representing the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, will be invited to inspect 1260 Squadron and 303 (Worksop) Squadron, with Station Commander Group Captain Tina Jessup RAF inspecting those on parade from RAF Cranwell.
Road closures will be in place along Cartergate, Baldertongate, Barnbygate, and Appletongate to protect the route of the parade. London Road car park will also be closed to non-parade traffic.
Newark Town Mayor, Diane Ledger, will also be invited to inspect veterans on parade.
A church service will be held at 11.15am at Newark Parish Church. The preacher will be the Rt Revd Peter Hill, Hon Assistant Bishop in the Diocese.
Following the church service, the Parade will form up on Church Street, proceeding down the middle aisle of the Market Place, where a salute will be taken by Air Chief Marshal Sir Andrew Pulford GCB CBE DL; RAF Cranwell Station Commander, Group Captain Jessup; Deputy Mayor of Newark, Barbara Corrigan and the chairman of Newark & District RAFA.
The Parade will return to the London Road car park via the Market Place, Bridge Street, and Baldertongate.
An invitation is extended to the citizens of Newark to watch the parade and join in the commemorations at the War Memorial and in the Parish Church.
A request for support from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight could not be supported this year.
